Modified Biophysical Profile
A modified biophysical profile or modified BPP is an nonstress test (NST) with the addition of an amniotic fluid index (AFI). It is performed to assess problems with placental function, which may be indicated for poor intrauterine growth or high blood pressure.
The AFI is performed by looking at the pregnancy with ultrasound. The amount of amniotic fluid is measured, as well as the position of the baby.
The modified BPP can be a useful tool when assessing fetal well being. These may be performed once a week with an additional NST once a week as recommended by the woman’s caregiver.
